Frequently Asked Questions By Parents
Questions about the Oral Surgery Processes for your child? Well, we’ve got answers.
Will my child experience a lot of pain after oral surgery?
Pain levels vary depending on the type of procedure, but most children experience mild to moderate discomfort. Dr. Bulloch will provide appropriate pain management strategies, which may include over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. For more invasive procedures, prescription medications may be added to the regimine. Applying ice packs, which we provide and ensuring your child gets plenty of rest will also help with recovery. We also provide detailed aftercare instructions.
What should my child eat after surgery?
Your child may wake up hungry after fasting prior to the procedure. Soft foods are recommended for the first few days after surgery. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods, and fruit with little seeds like raspberries that may irritate the surgical site. Ensure your child stays hydrated. Use straws only with thin liquids, try to use a spoon for foods that are thick in consistency, like a milkshake.
How long will it take for my child to recover after wisdom teeth removal?
Dr. Bulloch specializes in the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, bringing decades of experience and innovation to his practice. Over the years, he has gained recognition within the oral surgery and broader dental communities for his expertise in performing complex extractions like wisdom teeth near delicate structures such as nerves, sinuses, and thin bone. His innovative contributions to the field of dental implants have also set him apart as a leader in the industry. Dr. Bulloch serves on the board of the International Journal of Implant Dentistry and has been published multiple times, showcasing his commitment to advancing the profession.
Most children and teens recover within 3 to 5 days, but full healing of the gums and bone can take a few weeks. Swelling and mild discomfort typically peak around day 2 or 3 and then start improving. Following post-op care instructions, such as avoiding hard foods and strenuous activities, will help speed up recovery. If healing seems delayed or your child is in severe pain, contact our office, we are available 24/7.
How can I help my child prevent Dry Socket?
Dry Socket occurs when the protective blood clot is lost too soon, exposing the bone and nerves and leading to pain. To prevent this:
Avoid sucking thick liquids from a straw (think milkshakes)
Encourage a gentle rinsing with salt water on day 2
Have your child avoid smoking or being around smoke
Avoid eating anything sticky or chewy
If your child experiences severe pain 3-5 days after surgery, especially radiating to the ear or jaw, contact our office, as they may need treatment for dry socket.
