What Is An Abscessed Tooth?
An abscessed tooth is the same thing as an infected tooth. There are several reasons your tooth may be infected. The most common reasons are tooth decay or gum disease- both of which are untreated. If you leave the infection untreated, it won't go away on its own. It will have to be treated, so the infection will resolve, and your pain will go away.
There are two kinds of abscesses that involve teeth. You could have a periapical abscess, which happens when a tooth root gets infected. You might also have a periodontal abscess, which occurs at the gumline at the side of the tooth and the tooth root.
Warning Signs for an Abscessed Tooth
If you are worried about your tooth, here are some warning signs for an abscessed tooth. Severe, throbbing pain around the area of the infection. You may feel pain along your jawline, neck, face, or ear. You could get a fever, usually greater than 100.5 that can cause concern. You may experience more pain when you eat or drink something that is overly hot or overly cold. You can also experience tremendous pain when you are biting down or chewing.
